Handwoven Items on Ebay

Every pastorial culture needs to make clothes, baskets, and other iterms.  Some were able to use skins, but many used a variety of materials to weave what they needed.  They used all kinds of animal hair as well as assorted plant fibers.

Over time, as factory production of fabrics has developed these handwoven items have become scarce.  The fact is they are so labor intensive almost no one can afford to spend the time to make them.  Some have caught the eye of collectors and artists in the old crafts are able to make a living from them.  However, for the most part handwork is not really appreciated and will not provide a decent income.

This is really apparent on Ebay where much of the handwoven work is sold.   The list below shows all the current Ebay auctions for the term "Handwoven".  If you click any of the links and look at the auctions you will quickly see that you can buy fine handwoven items very cheaply.

My wife has had a long standing interest in Bobbin Lace .  She is frequently able to buy old bobbin lace items for a few dollars.  If you have an appreciate for this sort of thing it makes a great collectible.  It is not expensive, it doesn't take up a lot of room, is easy to pack and ship and is not easily reproduced.

Handwoven items come from many cultures, Scandinavian, Guatemalan, Tongan, Anatolian, Native American and many others.  There is lots of room for an eclectic collector to be creative.
